A Serbian SLAPP BACK fund was set up to help counter law suits filed against activists, a presentation was told in the northern city of Novi Sad.

KROKODIL NGO chief Vladimir Arsenijevic told the presentation the idea to set up the fund was launched in March 2024 when Aida Corovic refused to pay a fine for throwing eggs at a mural of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic and faced jail time. He said that the fine was 100,000 Dinars (1 Euro – 117 Dinars) and had to be paid within 72 hours and added that 800,000 Dinars were collected in that time from a large number of donations.

“We realized that solidarity does exist despite our lack of confidence an exhaustion, that people do want to take part in things and we decided to form the SLAPP BACK fund,” he said.

Opposition activists and independent journalists have faced SLAPP suits filed by state and ruling party officials frequently in the past few years.
