Serbia’s Defense Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said he never had any connections with the Veljko Belivuk clan or with any other criminal clan and denied a Srpski Telegraf report that he used the Sky mobile phone application, announcing a lawsuit against the paper.

“Regarding the latest lie that I had and used a phone with the Sky application, which the ‘Srpski Telegraf’ claims, I must say that it is a monstrous fabrication which has the obvious goal to indirectly connect me with a criminal group. I have never had such a phone, nor did I communicate with anyone via the Sky application,” said Stefanovic, according to a Defence Ministry statement.

He stressed that he led a strong campaign against organized crime and especially emphasized the abuse of encrypted connections and the Sky application.

„The investigation against the criminal group of Veljko Belivuk started at the time when I was acting Minister of the Interior, and obviously the key segment of that investigation was the moment when the FBI broke that encryption, connected all those who used the Sky application and stood in the way of those who abuse the technology. The information that the FBI shared with European and Serbian services significantly helped in gathering evidence and filing charges against this criminal group,” he said.

“I will not allow anyone to put a target on me and my children’s backs with lies and fabrications for reasons known only to them, and I am sure that one day we will find out why they are doing that. Just as I have already sued all those who threatened my life and the life of my family with their lies, bringing me into contact with murderers and criminals, I will also act that way in this case, because I have confidence in my country and our judicial system,” he said.
