Serbia's film director Emir Kusturica denied on Tuesday he was appointed Director of the Russian Army Theater, saying such an interpretation probably came from the similarity of the English words 'director' as in the film industry and 'director' as in the head of an institution or company.

„I am not the Director of the Russian Army Theater, the former Soviet Army Theater, but for the last three months, I have been discussing the possibility of staging my films in theatrical form,“ Kusturica told the Russian Sputnik media outlet.

He added that the news „can be very easily checked with the Russians, in some papers, and the truth can be easily found.“

His denial came after the Prague International Film Festival – Febiofest decided to take away his Festival award after the director accepted to lead the Central Academic Theatre of the Russian Army three days before Russia’s attack on Ukraine and eight days after he was reported to have accepted the position.

Kusturica on Tuesday said he could be a guest at the Russian Army Theater as a director „when these turbulent times pass“.

Commenting on Febiofest decision to take away the award, Kusturica said that it only showed that the so-called witch hunt had started.

„The orthodox and the heretical will not be divided religiously but ideologically. I can hardly remember the award, but it does not excite me, let them take the award if there is anything to take,“ he told Sputnik.
