The leaders of the Democratic Party (DS), the People's Party (NS) and the Freedom and Justice Party (SSP) agreed in Belgrade on Friday to run together in April 2022 presidential, early general and Belgrade elections, regardless of what they said were unfair conditions.
At a joint press conference of the SSP, NS, DS, the Free Citizens' Movement (PSG) the Free Serbia Movement, the Movement for Change, the Civic Platform, the Democratic Union of Vojvodina Hungarians and the 'Sloga' United Trade Union, the leaders said they had formed an alliance for a just and stable Serbia and were convinced they would spread.
DS President Zoran Lutovac said they were going to a frontal fight against the Government and decided to make a broad alliance that should gather as wide a circle of people as possible, who had the same goal - creating a normal Serbia.
"We think it's a good way to attract those who are dissatisfied and those who have abstained. The broad alliance does not blunt the edge of the fight against the regime; on the contrary," he added.
Vuk Jeremic, the NS leader, said they all would work together "so that after April 3, Serbia does not look like it does today."
He added there were political differences in the alliance but that their common goal was - a normal system. In such a normal environment, political differences would come through institutions, free media and public debate.
SSP leader Dragan Djilas said they allied for a just and stable Serbia.
"We united because we listened to the citizens," he said and added that in the last elections in 2020, people asked them to boycott the vote, but now they asked them "every day across Serbia to take part."
He said that the campaign would not be extensive or expensive but try to reach every person.
Pavle Grbovic, the PSG leader, said they achieved "not such a small victory today."
"We have defeated ourselves. We have overcome our vanity, our ego. The very fact that these people are sitting together shows we are mature enough and can respond to the needs of society at this moment," he added.
He said he believed they would not only be able to win in Belgrade and achieve a significant result in the general elections, but that they would succeed in what would be the key task in the fight against the regime - to have a joint candidate in the presidential elections and make Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic enter the second round, face the opposition candidate directly and lose.
"It will be the final step towards our freedom," Grbovic said.
Marinika Tepic, an SSP deputy leader and the head of a joint opposition ticket in general elections, said that "we all share the same concern. We know that this is a crucial moment for Serbia, but I must share great satisfaction and happiness with you that we achieved our first victory today. There is no going back, no stopping on the road to finally change this Government. An important document was signed today. It is a Declaration on united participation in the elections.
Among other pledges, the document reads: "The opposition of Serbia has united because that is the only way to prevent the disappearance of our homeland. As citizens, you have been deprived of your rights, freedoms and choices. Your air, land and water are endangered. Everything valuable is endangered; the right to a life worthy of a human being is jeopardised. We, the signatories of the Declaration, will fight together with you citizens to return to the life we all deserve. We give you our word that we will return freedom and justice to the country and fight for media freedom and fair elections; the judiciary will be independent, and the Constitution and the law will be respected. "
Tepic called on all citizens, "who are aware of the country we have been living in for the last ten years", to join the united opposition.
