Silent gathering for victims of Belgrade school shooting

Thousands of elementary and high school students gathered in silence central Belgrade on Thursday to pay their respects to the victims of a school shooting a day earlier.

The crowd gathered in silence to lay flowers and light candles in front of the elementary school where eight children and a security guard were gunned down by a 7th grader a day earlier.

The mass of children and adults gathered at one of two places where flowers were laid and candles lit on Wednesday evening.

The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Porfirije paid his respects to the victims of the Belgrade school shooting on Thursday, saying that the most appropriate thing is to keep silent and have that silence serve as a prayer. The Patriarch served a memorial service in the St Sava Temple in Vracar.


The 13 year old boy shot and killed a security guard and eight classmates and wounded another seven before calling the police to turn himself in. He and his father were arrested.

In a show of respect for the victims of the school shooting, students and teachers at the high school in the town of Pancevo near Belgrade refused to attend classes.
