The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) held its final pre-election gathering in the southern city of Nis with President Aleksandar Vucic addressing the rally in the Cair sports hall.

An N1 reporter said that supporters were bussed in from all over the south of the country to fill the hall.

Vucic told the crowd to turn out to vote at local elections on Sunday, June 2 “to prevent the return of the state to a time of corruption and closing of factories”. Vucic’s name is on the SNS election ticket even though public officials are not allowed to take part in campaigning.

The president said that his party, “unlike the opposition… has a plan and program for development and progress”. He accused the opposition of “wanting to take Serbia back into the past”.

According to the president, “perhaps the most difficult election match” will be in Nis and added that he would be hard-hit if his party did not win that city.

Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and his predecessor turned Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic also spoke at the rally.
