The Spanish Parliament’s lower house rejected Thursday an initiative to recognize the self-declared independence of Kosovo, reported Beta.
The initiative was rejected with 293 votes against, 25 votes in favor and 27 abstentions, said the Serbian state TV (RTS).
The proposal was submitted by the MP caucus of the Catalan party Junts, and backed by Basque parties.
During the debate held Tuesday, members of the People's Party, Vox party, and Socialists’ Party of Galicia expressed opposition to the initiative. Members of the ruling Socialist Party also voted against it.
Spain is one of the five European Union (EU) countries that do not recognize Kosovo's independence.
It is believed that the main reason for Spain’s refusal to recognize Kosovo as an independent state is linked to Spain's stance regarding the aspirations of its northeastern region, Catalonia, to gain independence.
