Serbia's Novak Djokovic, 34, lost to Russian Daniil Medvedev, 25, 0-3 in the 2021 US Open Grand Slam, failing to surpass Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the number of GS titles and become the second ever player with all four GS in a calendar year.
Medvedev won 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4.
Djokovic is still close to becoming the GOAT since he had spent most consecutive weeks at the ATP #1 position, won all masters tournaments and has 20 GS titles together with Federer and Nadal.
So far, only the Australian Rod Laver managed to win four GS tournaments in one calendar year, 52 years ago.
Now 83, Laver still holds another record - #1 in the world in nine different years, six before and three after the start of the Open Era tennis competition in 1968, according to the ATP record list.
