Branislav Nedimovic, mayor of Sremska Mitrovica, a town 80 kilometers west of Belgrade, confirmed that the City Council was in session and decided at an emergency session to declare a day of mourning on Monday after the bus accident. A decision was also made to pay 200,000 dinars (cca 1,700 euro) to the families of the victims.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said that all the circumstances of the accident should be investigated, because the driver, at the age of 69, had received an unlimited medical certificate extension and that, according to information from the traffic police, the driver was at fault for driving at an inappropriate speed.
"As the traffic police told me, the driver is to blame, the speed is inappropriate. Of course, that is now a matter for analysis," Dacic told TV Prva.
Traffic engineer Ivan Bankovc told N1 that the problem is that Serbia does not have enough inspectors to supervise transporters, but also that directors and transporters are almost never sanctioned.
