The Party of Freedom and Justice (SSP) has accused Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic of orchestrating a violent police response following a peaceful protest in Belgrade, where over 150,000 people gathered.

In a statement, SSP claimed that a group of individuals armed with batons, allegedly sent by those close to the regime, served as a pretext for police to crack down on demonstrators. “The responsibility for what happened after the rally lies solely with Vucic,” the party said.

SSP also alleged that the government has ignored student and civic demands for seven months and continues to obstruct investigations, including into the killing of 16 people in Novi Sad.

The party criticised the occupation of the area in front of the Serbian parliament by regime-paid activists, claiming they intimidate and provoke citizens. “None of the protest participants carried sticks or batons. The police response was brutal and disproportionate,” SSP said, citing numerous injured citizens and video evidence.

They urged continued nonviolent resistance and the formation of a united front against the current regime.
