Stadium worth €21 million to open in city with lowest average salary
The new stadium in Serbia's southern city of Leskovac can accommodate 8,136 spectators and officially costs 21 million euros, while the funds are provided by the Public Investment Office, which is financed from the state budget. In other words, the citizens of Serbia are paying for the stadium, reported JUGpress.
According to the data of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS), for months now Leskovac has been at the very bottom of the list of Serbian cities ranked according to average monthly salaries, JUGpress reported.
When Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic toured the stadium construction site late last year, he said the Leskovac stadium will be the prettiest in the area.
Judging by the comments on social media, the citizens do not seem to be very impressed by its beauty. Their first thought is how much the Leskovac stadium was paid and then how much is it actually cost. Mentioned in many comments are the low wages in Leskovac and other things this money could have been spent on.
The official opening of the stadium is on August 21, 2003, the first day of the Leskovac Grill festival, but it will not be opened by President Vucic after all, reported JUGpress.
