European Commission spokesman Peter Stano said on Thursday that the European Union will always argue in favor of independent media.

He told a news briefing that the EU is a very strong advocate of the freedom of media, freedom of journalists. According to him, the EU holds in high regard all the quality independent media in the EU and beyond and will always be arguing for their work and freedom, they should enjoy both in their countries. “When it comes to media freedom, specifically in Serbia, I think is best to recall what was written about media freedom in Serbia in the latest report,” he said.

EC spokeswoman Ana Pisonero commented the latest developments in the Curuvija murder case, calling institutions to end impunity. “Journalists need an enabling environment that allows them to work in safety and security without fear of harassment, political pressure, censorship or persecution,” she said.

Stano said that attacks on the media such as Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s comments about the Guardian reflect on him and added that he should take a look at what is being done with the support of his administration when it comes to quality of journalism. “For example, allowing the instrument of Russian propaganda and lies to set foot on Serbian soil,” he said.
