European Union (EU) spokesperson Peter Stano said Monday that the objective of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue is normalization of relations not Kosovo’s recognition, but that recognition would be a logical consequence of normalization.
“But this is something way ahead in the process,” he added.
Asked by a reporter whether the fact that five EU member states have not recognized Kosovo's independence is consistent with the sprit and goal of the normalization agreement, Stano said the objective of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue is normalization of relations and that the task given to the EU as the facilitator is to work on helping both sides achieve this.
“There is no recognition in there but of course a logical consequence of normalization would be recognition, but this is something way ahead in the process,” said Stano.
He confirmed that a meeting of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue at the level of chief negotiators will be held on Tuesday, as announced by EU High Representative Josep Borrell after the high-level meeting of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti held last Wednesday.
“The priority of course and the agenda is determined by the top urgency of starting the implementation of the Agreement on the path to normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia,” said Stano.
