The State Department called the Serbian authorities to ensure fair and transparent legal proceedings for Tefik Mustafa who was arrested under a war crimes warrant at a border crossing.
Mustafa was arrested by the Serbian police at the Merdare border crossing on June 1 under a warrant which charges him with having committed war crimes in Kosovo at the end of the 1990s as a member of the Kosovo Liberation Army. He was ordered into detention for 30 days. Mustafa was identified by witnesses as one of the KLA troopers involved in the abduction and disappearance of three Serbian police officers in June 1999.
A State Department reply to the Voice of America called Serbia’s institutions to guarantee a fair and transparent legal process in line with rule of law as with any other arrest.
The Kosovo Foreign Ministry said that the arrest was arbitrary and demanded that the international community effect his immediate release.
