Tuesday's panel 'State of Democracy in Serbia 2021' heard a report saying the country was "nearing the bottom" in democracy and that not even European Union membership was not a guarantor for a democratic society.

The director of the Center for Contemporary Politics and co-author of the report, Nikola Burazer, said that it was the fifth report on the state of democracy in Serbia and that the situation was "getting worse from year to year."

"The 2020 report was the most negative of all that we published relating to the elections and bad relationship with the media. This year's report shows that Serbia is stagnant in terms of democracy, and no progress has been made in the last year," he said at the presentation of the report.

According to him, the freedom of the media, as the essential topic, has deteriorated with Serbia falling on the list of democratic countries.

Burazer also blamed the Parliament for becoming a "training ground for attacks on media and civil society".

The Belgrade Open School executive director, Miodrag Bjeletic, said the report had the same function as on October 5, 2000 - to warn Serbia's citizens that "something is wrong".

He added a documentary based on the report would be presented in mid-November.
