The stormy weather that hit most of Serbia on Monday evening caused problems in both road and air traffic as well as at least one fire caused by a lightning strike.
Hurricane-strength winds felled trees and tore off roofs in the Serbian capital and caused a blackout in parts of the city. Extensive flooding was reported in several parts of Belgrade.
The Belgrade city Fire/Rescue Department said its crews had been called out 28 times during the storm to deal with fallen trees and flooding as well as fires started by lightning.
Internal Affairs Ministry Fire/Rescue Department chief Milos Milenkovic told the Serbian state TV (RTS) that fire/rescue crews were called out across the country to deal with fires and help restore power in a number of towns and cities.
Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic said the public has to accept the reality of the changing weather with supercell storms. He said that some 55 liters of rain per square meter fell in the Serbian capital on Monday night adding that it normally takes a month for that amount of rain and added that 1,500 communal services staff were called out overnight.
The Belgrade Airport terminal building leaked in the heavy rain which, combined with the wind, held up arrivals. According to the Flight Radar portal, several flights were forced to circle the airport and at least one was redirected. Belgrade airport said departure flights would run late because of difficulties in refueling aircraft during the thunderstorm.
The storm also caused a blackout in the city of Smederevo where a house was set ablaze by lightning. The city streets were flooded in the heavy rain.
