Student bike riders in Council of Europe
The Serbian students who rode their bicycles to Strasbourg handed Council of Europe (CoE) officials their letter describing events in Serbia over the past 5 months.
“We came from Serbia to Strasbourg, riding bicycles, it was hot and cold, we laughed and were sad but we came to hand you the letter which details everything that happened over the past five months since November 1, 2024,” one of the students said handing the letter to CoE Deputy Secretary General Bjørn Berge at their meeting in that organization’s European Youth Centre.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said the students who rode bicycles to Strasbourg do not upset him adding that their trip was meaningless and that he is not afraid of being called by anyone from European institutions.
A CoE press release said the Berge promised to pass on the students’ messages to CoE bodies. “He also presented the priorities of the organisation, notably in the efforts to restore confidence in democracy in Europe and make it more resilient,” it quoted him as saying and adding that every member state, including Serbia, has legal obligations to honour standards, based on the European Convention on Human Rights.
Berge told the students that young people should have a say in every aspect of what the CoE does.
The meeting, part of which was closed to the media, was attended by CoE Director of Democratic Participation Matjaz Gruden.
