Student protesters from various higher education institutions said on Wednesday that their demand for elections is not a political goal or a bid for power, but strictly a “means of pressure,” which is why snap parliamentary elections would not cause instability, but are rather an attempt to stabilize society by returning sovereignty to the citizens.

In a post on Instagram, the students pointed out that only a new political majority, free from the pressures and interests that led to the current crisis, can create the conditions necessary for institutions to follow the law and for the demands of students and society at large to finally be met.
The students said that, when institutions systematically refuse to act in accordance with the law, elections remain the only means for citizens to peacefully shift the balance of power and restore the functionality of the system.
“In a situation where the judiciary, the prosecutor’s office, the police, and the executive branch are stripped of any real independence, changing the makeup of parliament and government becomes a prerequisite for any form of accountability,” the students emphasized.
They noted that at the beginning of their struggle they set four demands, and later two more, and that on May 5 they officially requested the calling of snap parliamentary elections.
Student protesters announced that on December 28, booths will be set up at approximately 90 locations across the country to collect signatures in support of calling snap parliamentary elections.
“On December 28 all of Serbia will slate victory,” the students said in their call to action.
