Student victim of police brutality in Valjevo speaks out: Six months without accountability

Vladimir Djordjevic, a student who was a victim of police brutality in Valjevo on August 14 last year, stated to N1 that six months later, those who beat Serbian youth in that town can still be seen passing by in patrol cars.

"We remember every month, and now that it has been six months, it is sad that we do not have a single responsible person. There is a dilemma as to whether those were policemen under the uniforms, because no one can believe that a trained policeman could do what they did. We even have identified policemen. Despite that, during the court proceedings, they all do their jobs and go to work normally," the student said.
Djordjevic described the atmosphere in the city as a "spiritual pantomime," noting that Valjevo has become a "ghost town" where citizens look at each other but lower their heads. He alleged that the violence was a calculated decision by local political figures to silence the youth and stop protests.
The student also shared that he is currently unemployed because an SNS commissioner, who also serves as a hospital director, fired him solely for their differing opinions. He emphasized that students will not give up until justice is served.
Currently, two legal proceedings are highlighting a stark contrast in the judicial system. "The police are charging us in one proceeding, claiming we beat them and caused serious bodily harm. In truth, they beat us, and we initiated a proceeding as well. In the case where we are sued, there have been three hearings, with a fourth coming soon. In the case where the police are accused: zero, nothing," Djordjevic explained. He reminded the public that there is no footage showing anyone hitting a policeman in Valjevo.
Regarding Saturday's gathering, Djordjevic expressed hope for a peaceful assembly despite rumors of potential counter-protesters from the SNS attempting to disrupt the event.
