Students, activists attacked over banners at rafting event

They said they tried to hang banners saying Students Win and Save Studenica (monastery which is in danger of being flooded by a dam and whose monks are being re-assigned for lending support to protesting students) from a bridge at the Mataruska Banja spa. Men who identified themselves as being from “a service” tried to seize the banners one of which was thrown into the Ibar river.

The incident took place on Sunday during the Veseli Spust annual rafting event which brings together a large number of people in boats and on rafts.

Videos show a group of men confronting the students and trying to seize the banners with the Save Studenica banner falling into the Ibar, triggering a serious altercation.

Two female students suffered arm injuries, according to the students and activists.
