Students block vote for student parliament in Novi Sad
A group of students spent the night closed in the Novi Sad University rector’s offices prior to Monday’s repeat vote for a student parliament.
The students, part of the informal group STAV, said they would stay in place until their demands are met, including better conditions and more than one candidate to head the student parliament at the university School of Philosophy. The STAV activists have blocked the vote several times to date, with at least one violent incident involving an alleged member of the Serbian ruling party.
Several police officers appeared in the rectorate after security guards called them in claiming that the students broke into the building’s canteen which two STAV activists denied.
The STAV activists enter the rector’s office building at 9 pm on Sunday, pushing past security guards. The students said they are there to prevent the vote, adding that under the rules of the university the elections can only be held in the college.
