Students in Novi Sad called for a cleanup of the country on Earth Day, saying that there is too much of both garbage and corruption.

“We are calling the public to join in the cleanup for Earth Day and clean up around their building and streets,” agriculture school student Mihajlo told N1. He said that his Novi Sad University school co-organized the cleaning of the campus in the northern Serbian city. According to him, the event is symbolic. “There is too much garbage and too much corruption. Corruption is the basis for the excess of garbage and by cleaning the physical garbage we’re throwing out the trash in institutions,” he said.

He said they are marking Eath Day by cleaning up the campus and and park at the Rector’s office building.

The students appealed to communal companies calling them to fight the worst pollution problem in Serbia – garbage dumped in natural environments.

Students in Kragujevac are following suit by cleaning up the areas around their colleges which are not grouped in a campus.
