On November 1 last year, a concrete canopy at the recently renovated station collapsed, killing 15 people and severely injuring two others. The incident has sparked weeks of student protests across Serbia demanding accountability for the tragedy.
In announcing the bridge blockade, students explained that they are forced to return to the streets because no one has been held accountable for the deaths and injuries three months after the incident. They highlighted that their demands remain unmet, while pro-regime media continue to target students. They also reported that students and members of the public have faced intimidation and physical assaults while holding 15-minute tributes to the victims.
The students called for public participation and media coverage of their protest, stating their goal is to ensure their voices are heard throughout Serbia, beginning in Novi Sad - the city where the tragedy that initiated the student protests occurred.
