Subotica professors make breakfast for students cycling to Strasbourg
On Friday morning, Subotica Polytechnic School professors made breakfast for around 80 Serbian student protesters who set off on bicycles to Strasbourg on Thursday to draw European officials’ attention to the situation in Serbia and the demands of Serbian students.
The students spent the first night of their days-long journey in the northern Serbian town of Subotica from where they continued on to Hungary on Friday morning.
The professors made an early start and gathered outside the School of Economics to make pancakes – a favorite among the students.
“There was also scrambled eggs, cold cuts... We didn’t count exactly how many pancakes we made, but it was about 250-300,” Aron Tekenjes, a professor at the Subotica Polytechnic School, told N1.
He explained that the professors regularly prepare pancakes for the student protesters. “Every time we bring them some, they ask if we’ll do it again the following Friday,” he joked.
“If they can cycle to Strasbourg, we can spare a few hours of our time to support them,” he added.
“They have sparked such energy, I just hope they stay strong, persevere, and that we can live in a normal, democratic society,” said Tekenjes while flipping pancakes in three frying pans.
When asked what he expects from the trip to Strasbourg, the professor said:
“I expect the West to understand what kind of society we live in, who is leading us, who is quasi-representing us, and that they will help the students... I expect the best, but it’s up to the students, we’re keeping our fingers crossed,” he said.
