Teachers protest, call all-out strike
Teachers decided on Thursday to stage a full strike next week as well as road block in front of the Education Ministry next Tuesday.
The teachers held a plenary in front of the Serbian Constitutional Court in Belgrade to decide on their next steps. Their decision means that classes will not be held at all in violation of the law which says that teachers on strike have to hold classes shortened to 30 minutes from the customary 45 minutes.
The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) Education Board lent its support to the protesting teachers as one of the main pillars of society. A statement said the teachers made justified demands to improve their material position, working conditions, security in schools and the perception of their role in society.
The protest in front of the Constitutional Court was staged by an informal group from Belgrade elementary schools. They were there to file a complaint over a discriminatory collective contract that favors teachers who are members of major unions.
The informal group said that a majority of the 96 schools it represents are staging some form of strike.
