Teachers across Serbia will go on strike on November 1, Education Union leader Valentina Ilic told N1 on Tuesday.

She said that classes will be cut from 45 to 30 minutes as of November 4. Classes in all schools in Serbia last 45 minutes. The shorter classes have been used as a form of strike or protest by teachers for years.

Ilic said that the teachers want to avoid a situation which would allow the government and Education Ministry to pressure them and take a third of their salaries.

“Every week 4 school districts will launch the legal strike, with 30 minute classes which means that their salaries would be reduced by a minimum,” she said and added that protests will be held every Friday. She said the time will come for a full strike with no classes.
