All four major teachers’ unions on Wednesday rejected President Aleksandar Vucic’s offer to come up with measures to improve the financial situation of education system employees.

Union officials met with Vucic on Tuesday to voice their grievances and identify problems that have to be deal with over the next two years. They were offered a draft document which said they have to restore teachers’ trust, that the education system is a key priority, make sure young people want to become teachers and improve the results of the education system. The document includes a pay raise of 10 percent and higher salaries later along with a collective contract.

A spokeswoman for the Nezavisnost union union members are calling the negotiators to resign, while the Union of Teachers of Vojvodina said the proposals by the authorities are far from the demands by teachers who have been striking for months. The teachers have been demanding improvements in education and more pay. That union believes that agreeing to the offer would be a betrayal of the teachers.

The Union of Education Staff of Serbia also rejected the proposal saying it ran counter to the demands of the striking teachers.  The Education Union of Serbia’s leader Valentina Ilic told Danas daily that her union also rejected Vucic’s offer.
