Tensions following Student Parliament elections: Police smash window to enter Medical Faculty Dean’s Office building

Friday morning was calm following the unrest on Thursday, when medical students cast their votes for their representative body.

Two organizations contested the seats for the Student Parliament: Medical Circle, comprising members of the previous parliament, and the Student Action for the Academic Community, Solidarity, and Action (SINAPSA), a group of student protesters.

According to reports, 2,015 students cast their ballots yesterday, resulting in a record turnout. However, students reported numerous irregularities during the voting process, including the discovery of ballots that were a different color than the official ones.

After the polls closed on Thursday evening, students from the Medical Faculty and other departments gathered outside the Dean’s Office building while the commission counted the votes. Police also arrived at the scene.

Instead of declaring a winner, however, the commission issued a handwritten notice informing the crowd that the elections had been annulled. This sparked a confrontation among those gathered. At one point, police smashed a window of the Dean’s Office building where the commission was located. Commission members were then escorted out of the building under police protection. One medical student was injured during the chaos.

The students are expected to issue a formal statement providing full details regarding Thursday’s events.
