“In making this decision, the chamber particularly considered the length of detention of over four months for criminal offenses being prosecuted under summary proceedings. The chamber lifted detention for defendants who have not been previously convicted, as well as for the defendant who was previously fined for a non-related criminal offense,” said the Higher Court in Novi Sad, Danas reported.
The court also said that regarding defendant D.N., who had previously received a suspended sentence for a similar criminal offense and for whom circumstances still exist indicating he could repeat the offense in the near future, the chamber replaced detention with a milder measure.
Student protesters from the University of Novi Sad were attacked on the night of January 27-28, first outside the offices of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in Novi Sad, and then a second group was attacked near an elementary school with baseball bats, when student Ana was seriously injured and had her jaw broken.
Following this incident, Milos Vucevic resigned as prime minister.
