Top general says Serbian military ready for renewed conscription

He told the pro-regime Vecernje Novosti daily that “normative documents, training plans, handbooks have been prepared along with barracks and new equipment for the first generation of recruits”.

Mojsilovic said that a Defense Ministry center is being set up for records and conscription along with work on raising health care capacities for the conscripts.

“Draft laws have been written and once they are adopted we will very quickly be able to receive the first generation of conscripts on active service. We have indications that this will happen next spring,” the general said.

Conscription was suspended but not abolished under a government headed by the Democratic Party (DS) before the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) came to power. Young men have to register when they come of military-service age.
