Two dead in Serbian chemical plant explosion

Two people died and a third was injured in an explosion at a pesticide and chemicals plant outside Belgrade on Monday morning.

The Nova.rs portal reported that the two workers died when a boiler under pressure exploded in a production facility at the Agrosava plant in the hamlet of Simanovci. It added that another worker was injured and taken to hospital for treatment for injuries that are not life-threatening. There was no release of gases in the blast, media reports said.

Agrosava staff refused to comment on the possible causes of the explosion, saying that an investigation was underway.

The Agrosava company is registered for the production of pesticides and and farming chemicals. According to the Serbian Business Registry (APR) the company has 215 employees. The village of Simanovci is in Vojvodina province about 30 kilometers from Belgrade.
