The US and Ukrainian embassies to Belgrade issued separate statements criticizing the participation of head of Serbia’s Security and Intelligence agency (BIA) Aleksandar Vulin in an international security conference in Moscow, reported radio Free Europe (RFE).
Replying to RFE, the Ukrainian Embassy pointed out that Serbia and Ukraine are both striving for membership in the European Union (EU) and that, with this in mind, Serbia should impose sanctions on Russia, RFE reported.
We are counting on a candidate country for EU membership aligning with the common European policy towards the aggressor state, the Russian Federation, said the Ukrainian Embassy.
In a written reply to RFE, US Ambassador Christopher Hill said no one should lend legitimacy to Russia’s action by cooperating with the Kremlin as if everything were fine.
Hill stressed that Russia’s aggression against its peaceful neighbor is illegal and unreasonable.
He said Russian President Vladimir Putin started the war and that he can and should immediately end it and stop the deaths and destruction resulting from it.
The Russian state media reported on May 24 that BIA director Aleksandar Vulin is participating, as a representative of Serbia, at an international security conference in Moscow.
Official information on his participation in this conference was not published on the official websites of Serbian institutions, while the Serbian Government did not respond to an RFE request for a comment.
