UN war crimes court preparing for Seselj trial

The UN Hague-based war crimes court is preparing for a contempt case trial against the leader of the ultra-nationalist Serbian Radical Party (SRS) Vojislav Seselj.
Seselj was sentenced for war crimes by the Hague Tribunal (ICTY) predecessor of the current International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.
A Mechanism press release said that the Seselj and 4 co-defendants are charged with “ knowingly interfering with the administration of justice, disclosing confidential information about protected witnesses, and failing to comply with court orders to cease the publication of confidential material” related to proceedings before the ICTY and Mechanism.
It said that Mechanism Registrar Abubacarr Tambadou appointed Brent Hicks as the Monitor in the contempt case against Seselj, Miljan Damjanovic, Miroljub Ignjatovic, Ljiljana Mihajlovic and Ognjen Mihajlovic. Hicks will monitor court proceedings in Serbia since the case was referred to the Serbian judiciary in February 2024, following a judicial decision by the Mechanism’s Single Judge, Liu Daqun.
