Unions: 75 percent of elderly in Serbia lack adequate healthcare

The Sloga United Trade Unions of Serbia on Monday said that two-thirds of elderly people in Serbia do not have access to proper healthcare or social protection, with many living in conditions of extreme poverty.

In a statement marking the International Day of Older Persons, Sloga highlighted that pensions are insufficient to cover basic living costs, including healthcare and food.
“Systemic care for the elderly, particularly pensioners, has been reduced to a bare minimum. The vast majority of older people have been pushed into poverty, while certain political parties, claiming to be ‘protectors of pensioners,' merely see them as safe voters during elections, abandoning them when it comes to protecting their rights,” said Sloga president and MP Zeljko Veselinovic.
He emphasized that it is unjust for people who contributed to society for decades to be denied a dignified old age.
Sloga will push for reforms to labor laws and the pension system, wage and pension increases, and better protection of pensioners' social rights, it said in a press release.
