Labor unions are dissatisfied with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s proposal for next year’s minimum monthly wage to be set at 40,000 Dinar (1 Euro – 118 Dinar), and are not ruling out the possibility of a general protest, Beta reported.

“Some 50 per cent of employees have salaries that are a little below or above the median, which is around 47,000 Dinar. At this point the minimum monthly wage must not be under 50,000 Dinar. I think that the threshold of tolerance has been exceeded and a general protest is not ruled out,” said Zoran Mihajlovic, the secretary of the Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS) Council.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Wednesday evening that, in association with the Social and Economic Council of Serbia, he would try to secure for next year a minimum monthly wage of 40,000 Dinar, which is 340-350 Euro. He said the minimum monthly wage will significantly increase, by 14-15 per cent compared to this year, but not dramatically so as not to threaten the survival of investors, especially German, Japanese and Chinese.

People are hungry, the school year is soon to start, firewood needs to be purchased. A minimum wage of 40,000 Dinar for 2023 is below our expectations,” said Mihajlovic, adding they have worked out that the “labor basket” costs 53,000 Dinar.
