University of Belgrade Rector: State shouldn’t view the university as an enemy

University of Belgrade Rector, Professor Vladan Djokic, said the relationship between the state and the University is strained, as the government exerts pressure in various areas of operation.

He emphasized that the state should not perceive the university as an adversary or as someone intent on undermining it.

In an interview with the Serbian state TV (RTS), Djokic said that the state has been particularly pressuring Belgrade university faculties, especially after they expressed support for students.

“Somehow we and the state are now positioned as opposing sides. In reality, this should not be the case. The university is the backbone of society, one of the few institutions that citizens of Serbia trust,” said Djokic.

The rector said that the Serbian Government’s decision to reduce professors’, lecturers’, and researchers’ salaries to just 15 percent is unlawful.

“The University of Belgrade has formed several legal teams to challenge this decision through lawsuits. The university maintains that it has not acted unlawfully and has not suspended operations. However, professors and faculties are unable to conduct classes due to ongoing blockades,” Djokic explained.
