The Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) condemned Friday the physical attack on Nova.rs journalist Ana Markovic, who was reporting from the Stop, Serbia! protest in Belgrade, and called on authorities to identify and punish the attacker.

In a press release, UNS urged protest participants to stop targeting journalists and media workers.

They demanded that the police investigate this and all other cases of violence against journalists so as to send a clear message that such violence is punishable and unacceptable.

During a 15-minute traffic blockade outside the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade on Friday, Markovic was struck by a driver who clashed with protesters because he wanted to pass through.

According to Markovic, the driver hit her in the forearm in an attempt to knock the phone out of her hand as she was filming the protest.

Markovic told UNS that her injuries were not serious, but that the incident was upsetting and that she did not report it to the police, as those present at the traffic blockade did so as soon as incidents started happening.
