„It is difficult to understand why a convicted war criminal has public space to promote the release of a convict for the assassination of Serbia’s first democratically elected prime minister,“ a US embassy spokesperson in Belgrade said in response to a petition seeking the release of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic’s murderer.

Convicted war criminal Dragan Vasiljkovic is conducting a petition to ask the President of Serbia to pardon Zvezdan Jovanovic, the convicted murderer of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic and a former member of the disbanded Special Operations Unit (JSO).

A spokesman for the US Embassy also said that it would be best to ask the Serbian authorities that question, which the Voice of America did, but neither the cabinet of Prime Minister Ana Brnabic nor Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic responded by the conclusion of the text.

Signatures were collected at several locations in Belgrade, under the auspices of a non-governmental organization called the „Captain Dragan Foundation for the Defence of Serbs Anywhere in the World Persecuted for the Sin of Birth.“

Dragan Vasiljkovic served 13.5 years in prison in Croatia for a war crimes verdict in Knin and Glina during the 1990s conflict. During the trial, it was proved, among other things, that as commander of the Special Purpose Unit of Serb paramilitary units, in June and July 1991, he tortured, abused and killed captured members of the Croatian army and police in the Knin Fortress prison.

In March 2020, he was released from prison and then expelled from Croatia, and since then he has been in Serbia, where he is a frequent guest on tabloid television stations, whose owners have close ties with the Serbian authorities.
