Murphy, who visit Pristina and Belgrade earlier this week, said in a Twitter post that he is surprised by the unrest in the north of Kosovo following an attempt by the new Albanian mayors to enter the local administration buildings in majority-Serb municipalities. The mayors were elected in recent local elections which the Serbs boycotted.

Just off the phone with @CounselorDOS re this troubling development. In my meeting Monday in Pristina w/ PM Kurti, he made no reference of a plan to access municipal buildings. As a friend of Kosovo, I am caught totally by surprise and he should end this provocation immediately. https://t.co/PfF1BaVNB1

“In my meeting Monday in Pristina withPM Kurti, he made no reference of a plan to access municipal buildings. As a friend of Kosovo, I am caught totally by surprise and he should end this provocation immediately….These officials have the technical legal right to access these buildings. But at this exact moment, with the situation so tense in the north, it is an intentionally provocative and unnecessary step,: the senator wrote.

Murphy said he spoke to Department of State Counselor Derek Chollet about “this troubling development”.
