It quoted him as saying at the online Tirana Economic Forum that Kosovo and Serbia should use this window of opportunity to achieve progress in the dialogue which is of crucial importance to the European aspirations of Kosovo and Serbia. Varhelyi said that the European Commission will help the dialogue with their American friends.
The commissioner said that it’s important that Serbia accepted the new EU expansion methodology adding that greater political stability is expected of Kosovo in order to speed up reforms including rule of law and social and economic development.
Varhelyi said that the EU and the countries of the region can fulfill the promises they made – that the entire Western Balkans will be part of the EU and that the countries of the region will implement fundamental reforms - only if they act together. We are working hard to speed things up so that the EU can meet its promise but you have to meet yours, he said and added that the expansion of the EU to the Western Balkans is the Union’s highest priority and is in its best interest.
