Dijana Hrka, whose son Stefan was killed in the collapse of a concrete awning on November 1, told TV Nova’s morning show that she had to leave Serbia fearing for her safety and added that she is sorry not to be able to light a candle for her son and stand with the students protesting in her home town of Novi Sad on Thursday.

Hrka has come under attack several times for criticizing the authorities over the tragedy that killed her son.

She said that she does not trust the government or the police and is disappointed that nothing is being done to bring the people responsible to justice. “I don’t trust our state and I’ll seek justice in some other place,” she said.

Hrka was verbally assaulted by regime supporters during the student protest at the Serbian state TV headquarters.
