A video showing a Serbian Orthodox Bishop threatening to curse the LGBT population and speaking out against Serbia’s openly gay outgoing Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has gone viral on social media.
The video shows Bishop of Banat Nikanor saying that he would say a curse against them (the LGBT population) and asking if he should listen to the woman who desecrated the country and “allowed her own brother to father her son”. Brnanbic and her partner have a son conceived in vitro allegedly with semen from her brother. The Bishop also spoke out against Brnabic’s ancestry claiming they slaughtered Serbs. According to reports, Brnabic’s grandfather was Croatian. Nikanor is also reported to have called for violence against the LGBT population.
Serbian Equality Commissioner Brankica Jankovic condemned the Bishop’s discriminatory and hate-filled words and calls for violence. “Expressing views and ideas which include hatred and calls for violence against the LGBTI community and which are an offense to dignity based on origin or nationality is impermissible and banned by law,” Jankovic said in a written statement.
She finds it incomprehensible that the dangerous words were spoken by a man whose calling is to spread tolerance and understanding. She said the words of church elders should not delve into democratic society issues and should remain focused on religious issues.
