Petkovic: Displaced Serbs will be able to vote in Kosovo on Sunday
The Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Petar Petkovic, denied claims by some Pristina-based media that Serbs displaced from Kosovo would not be allowed to travel by bus to the elections in Kosovo on Sunday, February 9.
Petkovic stated in a press release that this was fake news aimed at preventing Serbs from going to vote on Sunday.
“From the international community, Belgrade received a clear and firm assurance last night that there will be no changes to the procedures for the entry of internally displaced Serbs to vote, and they will be allowed to exercise their voting rights without obstacles or interference,” said Petkovic.
He also added that international partners had confirmed to the official Belgrade that their representatives would be present at the administrative crossings to ensure the unhindered entry of displaced Serbs to vote, as the Serbian authorities had informed them multiple times through diplomatic channels.
The Ministry of Infrastructure of Kosovo had announced that buses with Serbs coming to vote would not be allowed entry, unless they are part of regular routes or obtain permission from the relevant authorities.
At the same time, Kosovo’s police announced that only carriers with registered international routes, including Serbia, would be allowed to enter Kosovo that day.
The Kosovo parliamentary elections will be held tomorrow, February 9.
More than two million people will have the right to vote for one of the 28 lists, with about one hundred thousand of them living outside Kosovo.
Within Kosovo itself, 1,970,944 citizens have the right to vote, while 104,924 individuals are registered to vote from abroad.
