Belgrade independent weekly Vreme said that it received confirmation that a Belgrade police unit has a sonic weapon which was tested on its officers.
“A reliable Internal Affairs Ministry (MUP) source told Vreme that on the sound cannon was handed to the city Police Brigade which is charged with suppressing riots and that it was tested on police personnel who became incapable of doing their job,” the source is quoted as saying.
People in Belgrade reacted to the alleged use of a sonic weapon at Saturday’s protest with noise on Monday evening, blowing whistles and banging pots and pans from their windows.
A Vreme source, a retired officer, said that a sonic device was imported by a local arms dealer in 2018 with permission from then Defense and Internal Affairs Ministers Aleksandar Vulin and Nebojsa Stefanovic.
Another source said that a similar weapon was imported in 2022 from Israel by a private arms dealer but added that the question is whether they are still in Serbia or were re-exported.
