Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he had a “long, open, substantive, and relatively cordial” meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, focusing on Serbia’s EU integration and the situation in Kosovo.

“We expressed differing views on certain issues regarding Kosovo and Metohija, but there was significant agreement on many global topics. Also highlighted was the importance of our bilateral cooperation and our gratitude for the many German factories and investors who employ people in our country and contribute to its development,” Vucic told reporters following his meeting with Scholz. (Kosovo and Metohija is the official name for what the Serbian authorities consider to be the country’s southern province)

He added that German investors also played a key role in boosting Serbia’s investment rating.

Vucic also participated in a meeting with leaders of ten countries from around the world, where discussions centered on Germany’s initiative to establish a global alliance for mineral resources.

The Germans are planning for the long term, looking ahead to what is coming in five, 10, or even 15 years, instead of just focusing on the short term, said Vucic. They are gathering countries to explore potential sources for importing green hydrogen, lithium, and batteries, he explained.

“Chancellor Scholz was very fair, he kept saying ‘whatever we do, we want a portion of the processing to remain within the countries themselves,’” said Vucic, adding that Germany is a “reliable and important ally” in this regard.
