Vucic announces decisive state action, compares protesters to fascists

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic warned on Sunday that the government will take “surprising decisions” in the coming days in response to ongoing civic protests, before launching what he described as a decisive state action.

“In the next three or four days it will seem as if the state does not exist, as if we have been defeated. After that, you will see our determination to restore peace, order, and stability in our country,” Vučić said in a televised address to the nation.
He stressed that the government’s response will be “very different” from previous actions.

Throughout his speech, Vucic accused student and civic demonstrators of attempting to “destroy the state,” comparing them to fascists and Nazis.
Responding to questions from reporters, Vucic said the government had not considered declaring a state of emergency.
