Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that a large rally will be organized on February 15, or the day before, at which a people’s declaration on Vojvodina within Serbia will be adopted.
On February 15, Serbia celebrates Statehood Day, and the Serbian Orthodox Church also celebrates Candlemas (Sretenje in Serbian) on the same day.
He added that, at the rally, he will clearly say where and what kind of future lies in store for Serbia.
In an Instagram post, Vucic said that initiatives calling for granting Vojvodina the broadest autonomy – ranging from making it a republic, having a Vojvodina language, to the idea of Vojvodina seceding from Serbia — resurfaced over the past days and weeks, and that attempts have been made to exploit the country’s youth to this end.
“As people who are responsible, as people who know what Serbia is, what our country is, what our fatherland is, it is our duty to stand up to this using democratic, political means [sic],” said the Serbian president.
Along with a video message in the post, he wrote that Vojvodina will forever be part of Serbia.
“We don’t have a spare fatherland. Vojvodina is Serbia. Forever. And there is no giving in or retreating before those who want to destroy our country. We’ll meet on Sretenje!” Vucic added.
