Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that he insisted on clear guarantees for the country’s only oil refinery in the contract with the Hungarian MOL which is buying the majority stake in the NIS oil company from the Russian Gazprom Neft.

He told the Bosnia-Herzegovina Federalna TV that official Belgrade received guarantees that the refinery in Pancevo would continue operating. “The refinery must operate at least at 70 percent capacity. Serbia can’t exist without a refinery and we entered that into the contract,” he said.

Vucic said that the Serbian authorities want an additional 5 percent stake in NIS in order to have stronger oversight mechanisms. “If we get more than 34 percent we will have significant supervision and control mechanisms. That is our goal,” he said.
