Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic, who is in Beijing for the opening of the Winter Olympic Games, said on Friday night it was important for his country to continue building a relationship with China, adding he dealt with issues important for the country and "did not have much time to worry about party concerns," ahead of Serbia's presidential, early general and Belgrade elections in April.
Vucic from Beijing: Important to keep building relations with China
Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic, who is in Beijing for the opening of the Winter Olympic Games, said on Friday night it was important for his country to continue building a relationship with China.
„We monitor daily how the situation is getting more complicated. As one ‘match’ between Russia and Ukraine happens, the prices of everything go up. We have to procure larger quantities of everything because we do not know what tomorrow brings,“ Vucic told the pro-regime Pink TV in Beijing.
He added that China was buying raw materials, and seeing that, he said, he called on teams in Serbia to do the same, „to put as much gas as possible into Banataski Dvor,“ the primary gas storage in the country.
Vucic is due to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday and said, „we will well use those half an hour.“
Commenting on forthcoming elections in Serbia, Vucic said he dealt with important state issues and did not have much time to „worry about party concerns.“
But, he added, his ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) informed him that its candidates’ list would be strong.
Vucic said that the people who supported SNS and worked with that party showed great courage.
„We (SNS) are conducting a policy in the interest of our people, a freedom policy. Regardless of what will happen in the upcoming elections, in the party I still lead, the priority is for Serbia to pursue an independent policy and a policy of military neutrality,“ Vucic said.
He added that „Serbia respects everyone, but that it has learned to have a firm position on certain issues“.
