Vucic: I spoke with Hrka and Mrdic, asked them to end their hunger strikes

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he spoke by phone on Monday morning with Dijana Hrka and Ugljesa Mrdic, both of whom are on hunger strike. “I asked them to end their hunger strike and invited Ms. Hrka to the presidency for a meeting. All good people in Serbia are concerned for their health, and I pray and hope they will decide to end the strike,” Vucic wrote in a post on Instagram, adding that he added that he understands everyone who supports both of them, “but, in the end, the two of them are paying the price.”
“None of us can be at peace as long as their health is at risk,” Vucic said, expressing concern that they are sleeping in tents and not eating.
Dijana Hrka, mother of Stefan, one of the 16 victims of the canopy collapse at Novi Sad train station, told N1 on Monday morning that she would not end her hunger strike until institutions start doing their job.
She is demanding the prosecution of those responsible for the Novi Sad tragedy, the release of all detained students, and the calling of snap parliamentary elections.
Ugljesa Mrdic, an MP for the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), saying he is on a hunger strike in order to compel the prosecution to arrest Nebojsa Bojovic, former chairman of the Shareholders’ Assembly of Serbian Railways Infrastructure, and Milutin Milosevic, the former director of the company, along with their associates, whom he accuses them of being “responsible for the canopy collapse.” Mrdic also said he has filed a criminal complaint against them.
Serbian Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar said on Monday afternoon that Ugljesa Mrdic could no longer receive on-site medical aid and so came to the hospital, where he has started treatment.
Loncar noted that Mrdic is not currently in life-threatening condition, but added that if he had continued the strike, “by tonight or at the latest by tomorrow morning, he would have put his life in jeopardy.”
